TrueSource Global cover: Private Label vs White Label, choosing how to launch an Ayurvedic product
Short answer: White label is the fastest and cheapest way to launch, using an existing product under your brand. Private label adapts an existing product to your specification and packaging. Custom formulation creates a product unique to you, at the cost of more time, higher minimums and more regulatory work.

There are three common ways to launch an Ayurvedic or herbal product made in India: white label, private label and custom formulation. The right choice depends on how fast you need to launch, your budget, and how different you need the product to be.

White label: speed over uniqueness

With white label, you choose a product that already exists, such as an ashwagandha capsule, a turmeric tea blend or a yak cheese dog chew, and it is packed with your label.

Choose it when you want to test demand with a small first order, or add a familiar product to an existing range.

Watch out for competitors selling the same product under different brands. Your differentiation then comes from your brand, your price and your channel, not the product itself.

Private label: the practical middle ground

Private label starts from a producer’s existing capability, but adapts it to you. Typical choices include:

  • Format: powder, capsules, tablets, extract, resin or liquid
  • Strength and specification: for example, a standardised extract instead of a plain powder
  • Pack size and packaging: pouches, glass bottles, PET jars, tins or boxes
  • Label and artwork designed for your market

Choose it when you want a product that feels like yours without the time and cost of formulating from scratch. It is the route most growing brands take.

Custom formulation: for a product only you sell

Custom formulation means developing a new product to your brief: a proprietary blend, a new delivery format, or a product built around a specific claim strategy.

Expect more development rounds, stability testing to support your shelf life, higher minimum orders, and more regulatory work in your market, especially for novel ingredients or combinations.

Agree in writing who owns the formula, whether the producer may sell it to anyone else, and what happens to tooling or artwork if you change supplier.

Questions to answer before you decide

  1. How fast do you need to launch? If it is weeks, white label. If it is months, private label or custom.
  2. What does your first order look like? Lower volumes favour white or private label.
  3. How will you compete? On brand and channel (white label works), or on the product itself (private label or custom)?
  4. Is the product permitted in your market as specified? Check ingredients, levels and claims before you develop anything. This applies to all three routes.

What stays the same in every model

Whichever route you choose, insist on the same basics: a written specification, an approved sample kept as the reference, a Certificate of Analysis for every batch, label artwork you have checked against your market’s rules, and clear terms for what happens if a batch is out of specification. Frequently asked questions

Is private label the same as white label?

They are often used interchangeably, but there is a useful distinction. White label means an existing, unchanged product sold under your brand. Private label usually means the product is adapted for you, for example its format, strength, pack size or packaging, while still being based on the producer's existing capability.

Do I own the formula with private label?

Usually not, unless your contract says so. With white and private label, the base formulation typically belongs to the producer. If owning the formula matters to you, choose custom formulation and agree ownership of the formula in writing.

Who is responsible for label claims?

The brand owner. Whatever route you choose, you are responsible for the claims on your label and for the product meeting the rules of the market where you sell it.
