How to Source Himalayan Yak Cheese Chews in Bulk: Specs, Sizing, Packaging and Import Rules
A buyer's guide to bulk Himalayan yak cheese chews: what they're made of, sizes and grades, quality checks, private label packaging, MOQs and import rules.
Himalayan yak cheese chews have moved from a niche product in specialty pet shops to a staple of many pet ranges. They are simple to explain to a pet parent, long-lasting, and they fit naturally into a natural or premium positioning. For an importer or a pet brand, they are also a product where small differences between suppliers show up quickly: in hardness, in size consistency, and in what happens when the product is opened in a damp warehouse.
This guide covers what to specify, what to check and what your market will ask for.
What a yak cheese chew is
A traditional yak chew is a hard cheese made from yak and/or cow milk, with a little salt and lime juice to set the curd. The cheese is pressed, shaped into bars and slowly dried for weeks until it becomes very hard. Nothing else is needed, which is a large part of the appeal.
Variations you’ll be offered include:
- Original bars in several sizes;
- Functional chews with added botanicals such as turmeric, Ashwagandha, moringa or mint;
- Puffs made by microwaving the leftover ends of a chew, so nothing is wasted;
- Smaller formats, such as nubs for small dogs and cats, and crumble toppers.
Ask what milk is used. “Yak milk” chews are often a blend of yak and cow milk, and the label should say so.
Sizes and grading
Chews are sold by size band, usually defined by weight per piece and suggested dog size. There’s no universal standard, so write your own.
| What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Weight range per piece (e.g. 40–60 g) | The main driver of price and of the size you can claim on pack |
| Length and thickness range | Consistency on shelf, and fit with your packaging |
| Hardness and dryness | Under-dried chews soften, crack or grow mould in transit |
| Colour and surface | Natural variation is normal; cracks, dark spots and soft areas are not |
| Pieces per pack, or weight per pack | Fixes your unit economics and your label |
Chews are made and graded by hand, so expect some variation within a band. What you should not accept is a carton where half the pieces sit outside the band you agreed.
Quality checks before shipment
For each batch, agree what will be checked and recorded:
- Moisture content, which is the single best predictor of shelf stability;
- Microbiology, including Salmonella, which pet treat regulators watch closely;
- Foreign matter and visual grading, with photos of a random sample from each carton;
- Weight check of a sample against your size bands.
Ask for a batch Certificate of Analysis, and keep a retained sample of every approved batch. We describe how we work with producers on the floor, including hand-sorting before packing, on our quality and documentation page.
Packaging and private label
You can buy yak chews in three ways:
- Bulk, packed loose in lined cartons, for repacking in your own facility.
- White label, in the producer’s standard pouch or box with your label.
- Private label, in your own printed pouches, boxes or sleeves, sized to your range.
For private label, plan time for artwork approval and for printed packaging, which usually has its own minimum order. Pouches with a moisture barrier and a zip are the usual choice; boxes and sleeves suit single large bars. Our private label page explains the process.
MOQs and lead times
At TrueSource Global, most pet products, including yak chews, can start with pilot runs from 100 units, and most products run at around 500 units per SKU. Printed custom packaging may carry its own minimum. Samples are usually dispatched within 5–7 working days, and production typically takes 7–14 business days after the order and artwork are approved, before export documents and freight. Always ask for a written timeline with your quote.
Import rules: check eligibility first
Yak chews are a product of animal origin. That makes the import rules stricter than for a plant-based treat, and it is the step most first-time buyers underestimate.
- European Union: pet food and chews of animal origin can only come from countries and establishments eligible to export them to the EU, with an official health certificate, through a border control post. Check that the producer and the product qualify before you order.
- United Kingdom: similar principles apply for Great Britain, with health certificates and pre-notification of imports.
- United States: pet treats are regulated by the FDA as animal food, and products of animal origin may also fall under USDA APHIS import requirements. Your importer must meet FDA Prior Notice and foreign supplier verification duties.
- Other markets: Canada, Australia, Japan and the Gulf states each have their own permits and certificates for animal-origin pet products. Some require an import permit issued before the goods leave India.
The practical rule: confirm with your importer or customs broker which certificate your market needs, and confirm with your supplier that they can provide it for your product, before you agree a price. Our export documents checklist covers the rest of the paperwork.
Questions to ask a yak chew supplier
- What milk is used, and in what proportion?
- How long are chews dried, and what moisture do you release at?
- How do you grade sizes, and what is the tolerance?
- Which tests are done for each batch, and by whom?
- Which countries do you already ship to, and with which certificates?
- What are the MOQs for the chews and for printed packaging?
